WRITER

JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for creating original educational materials, including activities, passages, test items, and questions in language arts, math, social studies, or science. The writer must have expert command of the English language, including grammar, style, and mechanics, as well as superior collaboration skills. This position requires the ability to work efficiently in a high-pressure deadline-driven publishing environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create a variety of original educational content for grades ranging from kindergarten to high school
  • Generate effective multiple-choice, open-ended, and essay questions to assess specific educational standards
  • Write procedural materials, such as activity instructions, that adhere to technical writing best practices
  • Create engaging texts, both fiction and nonfiction, with interesting subjects and appropriate tones
  • Locate and research sources to provide accurate and informative material
  • Ensure readability of texts is appropriate for target audiences by using industry standard readability tests
  • Follow specifications in work orders from project managers
  • Communicate effectively with graphic artists, project managers, subject matter experts, and editors to ensure published projects exceed customers' expectations
  • Consistently meet production goals

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communication, education, or related field
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and WordPerfect
  • At least three years of related work experience in educational publishing
  • Teaching experience in elementary, middle, or secondary level preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to track, organize, and prioritize workload
